Is It Safe For My Cat To Live Outdoors

There is one big question you face when you become a cat parent. To let them outside or not to let them outside. Some people swear by indoor only and others by outdoor only. Then there are the people who are in between, where the cat can go in and out freely. And the truth is, there is no real right answer here because there are so many factors.

Factors like where you live; the traffic and wildlife in your area can make a huge difference. Also, are you willing to take them to the vet more often to re-up the vaccines they need in order to be outside safely? Because cats outdoors are exposed to dangerous diseases like kitty cancer and kitty HIV. But when your cat is safely tucked indoors, it’s not as much of a risk.

The Outdoor Life

Upside for outdoor cats:

  • Plenty of exercise
  • Stimulation from nature
  • Lots of trees and wood to sharpen claws on
  • They can fend for themselves outside and have better instincts

Downside for outdoor cats:

  • Run-ins with wild animals like raccoons, opossums or coyotes
  • Increased chances of getting hit by a car
  • Exposure to parasites and diseases
  • Possibility of getting trapped or stuck somewhere

Making the most of it:

  • Keep up with ALL the proper vaccinations for outdoor cats
  • Make sure you live in an area that is safe for you cat to be outside (ie: large yard instead of a busy apartment complex)
  • Always have an updated collar and have them microchipped
  • Break away collar

The Indoor Life

Upside for indoor cats:

  • Safe from hazards like cars and wildlife
  • Live longer lives
  • Need less vaccinations
  • Less likely to get sick

Downside for indoor cats:

  • Can become overweight more easily
  • More behavior issues due to boredom
  • Parental guilt for keeping kitty indoors
  • They often can become disoriented and are more likely to get lost if accidentally let out

Making the most of it:

  • Get your cat interactive toys
  • Make sure to play with them to give them plenty of stimulation to burn off extra energy
  • Don’t feel guilty because you’re providing a safe life for your cat
  • Make or buy a catio

There are a lot of different things to think about when considering letting your cat be an indoor or an outdoor cat. There are clear benefits and drawbacks of both. If you’re wondering what is best for your cat, talk to your vet about your lifestyle and they can help you decide what’s best. Just remember even if they venture outside only for afternoon hours, they still need all the vaccinations of a regular outdoor cat.

No matter what you choose as long as you have your cat’s best interest at heart they will be okay. You should never feel guilty for letting your cat out or for keeping your cat in. Each cat is different, every home and neighborhood is a different environment. It’s just a matter of perspective.
