How We Keep Dogs Safe During Chico’s Hot Summer Days
Summer in Chico is beautiful, but anyone who has lived here knows just how quickly the temperatures can climb. Triple-digit days are common, and even what feels like a comfortable morning can become dangerously hot by lunchtime.
At Sitter For Your Critters, your dog’s safety is always our top priority. That’s why we adjust our dog walking schedule on hot days to keep your dog happy, healthy, and safe.

Our Summer Dog Walking Policy
Every dog is different, but once daytime temperatures begin reaching 80°F or higher, we start modifying our walks.
Whenever possible, we schedule walks early in the morning when the sidewalks are cooler and the air is much more comfortable. Early morning walks allow dogs to:
- Get the exercise they need
- Burn off energy before the hottest part of the day
- Enjoy sniffing and exploring without overheating
- Stay on a more consistent routine throughout the summer
If your schedule allows for morning visits, this is always our preferred option during the hottest months.
What Happens During Mid-day Visits?
We know that not every family has a flexible schedule.
Many of our clients work during the day and rely on us to provide a much-needed potty break and companionship while they’re away. On hot days, we adjust our visits to keep your dog comfortable.
Instead of taking your dog on a long walk in the heat, we’ll typically:
- Take your dog outside for a quick potty break
- Spend only the minimum amount of time necessary outdoors
- Bring your dog back inside where it’s cool
- Enjoy playtime, enrichment activities, cuddles, or simply relaxing together in the air conditioning
This allows your dog to receive attention, mental stimulation, and companionship without unnecessary exposure to dangerous temperatures.

Why We Don’t Walk Dogs in Extreme Heat
Many people don’t realize that dogs can overheat much faster than humans.
Unlike us, dogs don’t sweat through their skin. They primarily cool themselves by panting, which isn’t nearly as effective when the air itself is extremely hot, and through the pads of thier feet.
High temperatures can increase the risk of:
- Heat exhaustion
- Heat stroke
- Burned paw pads from hot pavement
- Dehydration
- Difficulty breathing, especially in senior dogs and flat-faced breeds
Even energetic dogs who seem eager to keep walking may not recognize when they’re becoming dangerously overheated.
Our job is to make decisions that keep them safe even if that means shortening or skipping a walk.
Every Dog Is Different
Some dogs tolerate warm weather better than others.
We pay close attention to factors such as:
- Age
- Breed
- Weight
- Overall health
- Coat thickness
- Energy level
- The day’s temperature and humidity
- Body Language
If we ever feel conditions are becoming unsafe, we’ll modify the visit to protect your dog.

Exercise Doesn’t Always Mean Walking
Physical exercise is important, but so is mental enrichment.
On hot afternoons, many dogs are perfectly happy to trade a long walk for quality one-on-one time indoors.
Depending on your dog’s personality, we may spend time:
- Playing with favorite toys
- Practicing basic commands
- Working on simple enrichment games
- Giving plenty of affection
- Providing companionship while you are at work
Many dogs enjoy this just as much as a longer walk, especially when the air conditioning is running!
We Treat Your Dog Like Family
At Sitter For Your Critters, we never believe in a “one size fits all” approach.
Every decision we make is based on one simple question:
“What’s safest and best for this dog today?”
If that means enjoying a peaceful morning walk, that’s exactly what we’ll do.
If it means a quick potty break followed by indoor playtime because Chico is experiencing another 105-degree afternoon, that’s what we’ll do.
Your dog’s health and safety will always come first.
